Donations Coming in to Save Dam-4/4/2011

CROGHAN - Donations are nearing $50,000 for a study intended to save the Croghan Island Dam. Lewis County Development Corporation recently applied for $99,000 through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Business Enterprise Grant program in order to complete a proposed engineering study of the dam, expected to cost between $125,000 and $150,000.
Lewis County Legislators pledged $10,000 earlier this month. The town and village of Croghan boards have pledged $10,000 and $2,000, respectively. However, those municipalities did not include such funding in their respective budgets, so they are still determining where the money would come from and how to legally transfer it. The Beaver Falls Fire Department committed $5,000, and individual donors, most of whom live along the Beaver River, have pledged well over $10,000.
