BABY BEAR RESCUED
The cute little bear cub, in photo at left taken by Jerry Waskiewicz last week in front of his home on Route 12, Alder Creek, came down the tree and wandered his way to a sliding party on Saturday, February 9. Louise Zeigler of Mineral Springs Road said, “At the time (of the party) we weren’t sure what it was. It came back on Sunday and Monday, and was in my garage Monday night. Two of the boys were tracking it, and it went from one house to another, probably looking for food,” she said. “Tuesday morning when I got up I heard a noise and he was at my back door and in my garage. I watched him and he went around by my wood pile and up to my big garage.” Louise, who took the photo at right, said she called the Conservation Department and someone came to talk to her Tuesday morning. “He and my daughter-in-law Jeanie Zeigler went looking for him in my big garage and found him between the wheels of the 3-wheeler. They called another Conservation worker who brought a cage to put the cub in. He didn’t resist them. They were going to try to save him, but he was very weak.”

SNOW REMOVAL
With a “little break” from Mother Nature on Friday, February 15, the Boonville Village Street Department was busy removing snow from the village streets. They were cleaning up from the lake-effect snow storm that brought several inches of snow earlier in the week. The weather then turned warmer on Sunday, February 17, with precipitation coming in the form of rain, turning secondary roads and driveways into ice skating rinks. Area road crews were then kept busy Sunday and Monday, making sure the roads were well sanded and safe for travel. Luckily, school buses didn’t have to be out, as schools were closed for President’s Day, the start of a week-long winter vacation.
